Why can't we take off our clothes in public baths?
In Tunisia, there is an important cultural tradition called "hammam," which refers to public baths. However, these public baths are not just a place for washing one's body. Tunisians use hammams as a social gathering place, much like a village meeting spot.
Every village has at least one hammam, and they are strictly separated by gender.
In Tunisian hammams, it is not allowed to take off all of your clothes. Tunisians find it embarrassing to be naked in front of others, even in a bathhouse. Therefore, people wear underwear when taking a bath. It is essential to bring a change of underwear when visiting a hammam. Women should also bring a large towel called "fouta" to wear over their changed underwear.
Even today, hammams in Tunisia continue to serve as a central part of the daily life of the local population.
