Why do they walk around with plates in their mouths?
In Ethiopia, a small tribe called the Suri people are known for their unique and fascinating decorations, which involve inserting large plates into their lower lips.
They use these plates to eat and drink. There is a reason behind why they insert plates into their mouths. It is to prevent women from being taken as slaves by other tribes during raids. The Suri people believed that no one would want to take a woman with an enlarged lip plate, so it became a tradition that continues to this day.
The larger the lip plate, the more cattle a woman can receive from the groom's side during her wedding. Suri women typically start elongating their lower lips and inserting small plates in their early twenties, and they must complete the process by six months before their wedding. They gradually increase the size of the plates, with the largest plates having a diameter of up to 15cm.
Overall, the practice of inserting plates into their lips has become a cultural tradition for the Suri people of Ethiopia.
