상어보다 해파리가 더 무섭다고요?

 

  솔로몬 제도 연안에 살고 있는 해파리는 지구상에서 가장 독성이 강한 동물입니다. 해파리 한 마리가 사람을 60명 이상 죽일 수 있는 독을 가지고 있는데, 이 해파리에 쏘이면 4분 안에 죽는답니다.

  그래서 솔로몬 제도 사람들은 이 해파리를 '바다의 자객' 또는 '바다의 말벌'이라고 부른답니다.

  윗부분이 상자 모양으로 생긴 이 해파리는 솔로몬 제도 연안에 살고 있는 어부들에게는 공포의 대상입니다. 슬쩍 스치기만 해도 참을 수 없을 정도로 아픕니다.

  일단 상자 해파리를 만나면 피하기가 쉽지 않습니다. 크기는 농구공만 한데, 꼬리처럼 생긴 가느다란 촉수는 길이가 4.6m로 눈에 보이지 않을 정도로 투명합니다. 바로 그 촉수 끝에 무서운 독이 있는 것입니다.

  하지만 다행히 먼저 공격하지는 않는다고 합니다. 솔로몬 제도 근처에서 파도타기를 하는 사람들은 이 해파리에게 물리지 않기 위해 두꺼운 스타킹을 입기도 합니다.

The jellyfish living off the coast of the Solomon Islands is the most venomous animal on Earth. One jellyfish has enough venom to kill over 60 people, and a person stung by this jellyfish can die within 4 minutes.

That's why people in the Solomon Islands call it the "sea assassin" or "sea wasp."

The box jellyfish, which has a box like shape on top, is a terrifying creature for fishermen living off the coast of the Solomon Islands. Even a slight touch from it can be unbearably painful.

Once you encounter a box jellyfish, it's not easy to escape. The jellyfish is about the size of a basketball, and its thin, tail-like tentacles, which are 4.6 meters long, are almost invisible. That's where the scary venom is located.

Fortunately, it doesn't attack first. People who go surfing near the Solomon Islands sometimes wear thick stockings to avoid getting stung by this jellyfish.
