  카사블랑카는 모로코의 가장 큰 도시입니다. 이 카사블랑카 시내에는 도시 어느 곳에서나 보이는 높이 200m의 타워가 있는데, 바로 '하산 모스크'입니다.

  1994년에 완성된 하산 모스크는 실내 20,000명, 실외 80,000명을 합해서 무려 100,000명이 동시에 예배를 볼 수 있다고 합니다. 이 모스크는 이슬람 건축의 최고 작품으로 평가받고 있습니다.

 

  모스크라는 말은 '꿇어 엎드려 경배하는 곳'이라는 의미입니다. 다시 말해 모스크는 이슬람 신자들이 모여 예배를 드리는 장소 입니다.

  모스크 건축의 가장 큰 특징인 둥근 지붕은 평화를 나타냅니다. 둥근 지붕의 끝은 보통 초승달로 장식하는데, 초승달은 '진리의 시작'을 의미하는 것입니다.

  모스크 건축의 또 다른 특징인 첨탑은 두 가지 역할을 하고 있습니다. 하나는 하루 다섯 차례의 예배 시간을 알리는 것입니다. 높은 곳에 올라가 소리칠수록 멀리까지 들리기 때문입니다. 또 하나의 역할은 이방인들로 하여금 그 지방의 모스크를 쉽게 알아볼 수 이게 하기 위한 것이랍니다.
